"Seventeen" is a K-pop boy band from South Korea that was formed by Pledis Entertainment in 2015. The group comprises thirteen talented members, each with their own unique set of skills and talents. These members are S.Coups (rapper), Jeonghan (vocalist), Joshua (vocalist), Jun (vocalist, dancer), Hoshi (vocalist, dancer), Wonwoo (rapper), Woozi (vocalist), Dokyeom (vocalist), Mingyu(rapper), The8 (dancer, vocalist), Seungkwan(vocalist), Vernon (rapper), and Dino (dancer, vocalist, rapper).
The group made their debut on May 26, 2015, with their first extended play (EP) titled 17 Carat. The EP was a huge success, and it became the longest-charting K-pop album of that year in the United States. It was also the only rookie album to appear on Billboard's "10 Best K-Pop Albums of 2015" list. Since then, Seventeen has released four studio albums, twelve EPs, and three reissues.
Seventeen is renowned for being a self-producing idol group, with members actively involved in every aspect of their music and performances. They not only write their own songs but also choreograph their dances, among other things. The group is divided into three sub-units: hip-hop, vocal, and performance, each with a different specialization. They are known as the "Performance Kings," "Theater Kids of K-Pop," and "K-Pop Performance Powerhouse," as they put on some of the most captivating performances in the industry.
In their debut year, Seventeen won three rookie awards, and they have since gone on to earn six Bonsang (main prize) and three Daesang (grand prize) awards from various year-end award shows. Their excellent dance skills have earned them the Best Dance Performance Award at the Mnet Asian Music Awards three times, in 2017, 2018, and 2022.
On October 28, 2020, Seventeen received a Prime Minister's Commendation at the Korean Popular Culture and Arts Awards for their contribution to the development of South Korea's contemporary pop culture and arts. In September 2021, the group was honored with the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award at the 2021 Newsis Hallyu Expo. They were also nominated for Top Social Artist at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards.
At the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards, Seventeen was nominated for Best New Artist and Best K-Pop, and they won Push Performance of the Year. They were also nominated for Best K-Pop at the 2022 MTV Europe Music Awards, where they won Best Push Act and Best New Act. This was a historic moment for the K-pop industry, as Seventeen became the first-ever K-pop group to be nominated and win these categories.
On December 30, 2022, Seventeen added another accolade to their impressive list of achievements when they won the Special International Music Award at the Japan Record Awards.
