Muse is a rock band from Teignmouth, Devon, England, formed in 1994. The group is made up of Matt Bellamy (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Chris Wolstenholme (bass, backing vocals), and Dominic Howard (drums, percussion). Known for their energetic live shows and innovative sound, Muse blends alternative rock with a range of musical styles, including classical, electronic, and pop.
Their debut album, Showbiz, came out in 1999, featuring Bellamy’s distinctive falsetto voice and a dark, emotional tone. The follow-up album, Origin of Symmetry (2001), added more instruments and classical influences, establishing their growing fanbase. With Absolution in 2003, Muse reached new heights, using orchestral elements like strings on tracks such as “Butterflies and Hurricanes.” This album marked the first of seven consecutive number-one albums in the UK.
Muse’s international breakthrough came with their fourth album, Black Holes and Revelations (2006), which mixed electronic sounds and pop with their rock foundation. The hit single “Supermassive Black Hole” was a key track from this era. They continued experimenting with their sound on The Resistance (2009) and The 2nd Law (2012), touching on themes of government control and social unrest.
In 2015, they returned to a heavier rock sound with Drones, a concept album centered on drone warfare, which topped the US Billboard 200. Their eighth album, Simulation Theory (2018), was inspired by science fiction and featured a strong use of synthesizers. Muse’s most recent album, Will of the People (2022), combined elements from their previous albums and explored multiple genres.
Throughout their career, Muse has won many awards, including two Grammys, five MTV Europe Music Awards, and eight NME Awards. They have sold over 30 million albums worldwide, making them one of the biggest rock bands of their generation.
