Joseph Akinwale (born May 21, 1997) was born in Lagos State, Nigeria. He is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. He is professionally known as Joeboy. His musical style is a blend of Afro-pop and R&B. In 2017, he was discovered by Mr Eazi of emPawa Africa, a record label that focuses on discovering and supporting African talent.
Joeboy's music career took off with the release of "Fààjí" in 2018, a collaboration with Mr Eazi. He used the grant he received from emPawa100 to create a music video for the song. In March 2019, Joeboy released "Baby," which went on to accumulate over 20 million streams on YouTube and Spotify in the same year. The music video for "Baby" also surpassed 31 million views on YouTube.
Later in August 2019, he released "Beginning," a Killertunes-produced track, and accompanied it with a visualizer music video that garnered over 23 million views on YouTube. He followed it up with his debut extended play (EP), Love & Light, which was released in November 2019 by emPawa Africa. The EP contained four tracks, including "Baby" and "Beginning," and featured collaborations with Mayorkun on "Don't Call Me" and "All for You."
Joeboy's musical prowess has won him several awards, including Best Artiste in African Pop at the 2019 All Africa Music Awards and Best Pop at the 2020 Soundcity MVP Awards Festival. He has also been nominated for multiple City People Entertainment Awards and The Headies. In April 2020, he released "Call," the lead single from his upcoming debut studio album. The TG Omori-directed music video for "Call" features dystopian sci-fi themes.
In January 2021, Joeboy announced his debut album, Somewhere Between Beauty & Magic, which was released in February 2021 to moderate commercial success. The album features tracks such as "Focus," "Count Me Out," and "Lonely." With his unique blend of Afro-pop and R&B, Joeboy continues to be one of Nigeria's most promising young talents.
