CHVRCHES is a Scottish synth-pop band from Glasgow, formed in September 2011. The group includes Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook, Martin Doherty, and unofficially, Jonny Scott since 2018. Their music blends synth-pop with elements of indietronica, indie pop, and electronic dance.
The band gained attention with their first single, "Lies," released in May 2012 on the Neon Gold Records blog. It was a test to gauge audience response, and it worked. Their next single, “The Mother We Share,” released in November 2012, led to a deal with Glassnote Records and a Grulke Prize for the best non-American act.
CHVRCHES' debut album, The Bones of What You Believe, came out on 20 September 2013. It featured hits like "Recover" and "The Mother We Share," earning critical praise and a spot on the BBC’s Sound of 2013 list. Their second album, Every Open Eye, released in September 2015, refined their sound with upgraded equipment. Their third album, Love Is Dead (2018), introduced indie rock influences.
In 2019, they collaborated with Marshmello on the hit single "Here With Me." Their most recent album, Screen Violence, launched on 27 August 2021. The album’s theme draws from horror films, with Mayberry often playing the "Final Girl" in live shows. The release coincided with a post-pandemic tour.
CHVRCHES has consistently evolved, blending genres and themes. Critics admire their innovative sound and Mayberry’s emotional vocals. Each album reflects growth, from their polished debut to the darker tones of Screen Violence. The band’s ability to connect with listeners while experimenting with new ideas keeps them a leading name in modern synth-pop.
