About Black Midi
Black Midi, formed in London in 2017, is an experimental rock band known for their bold mix of styles, including math rock, progressive rock, post-punk, and avant-jazz. The group originally consisted of Geordie Greep, Cameron Picton, Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, and Morgan Simpson. After Matt left in 2020 for health reasons, the band continued as a trio, often joined by session musicians like Seth Evans and Kaidi Akinnibi.
Their name comes from the Japanese electronic music genre "black MIDI," though their sound is unrelated. Black Midi debuted with the single "bmbmbm" in 2018 under Dan Carey's Speedy Wunderground label. Their first album, Schlagenheim, released in 2019, gained critical praise, reaching the UK Albums Chart's top 50 and earning a Mercury Prize nomination. Known for their creative unpredictability, the band followed up with The Black Midi Anthology Vol. 1: Tales of Suspense and Revenge in 2020, showcasing experimental jams and spoken word.
