About Ben E. King
Benjamin Earl King (September 28, 1938 – April 30, 2015) was born in Henderson, North Carolina, United States. He was an iconic American soul and R&B singer, best known for his timeless hit "Stand by Me". He gained fame as a lead vocalist for the Drifters, singing on some of their biggest hits, including "There Goes My Baby," "This Magic Moment," and "Save the Last Dance for Me," which became the group's only U.S. No. 1 single.
After leaving the Drifters, King embarked on a successful solo career. His signature song, "Stand by Me," which he co-wrote, became a hit twice — first in 1961 and then again in 1986, after being featured in the film of the same name. It also topped the UK charts in 1987. The song remains one of the most beloved tracks in popular music history and was included in the RIAA's list of Songs of the Century.
Throughout his career, King produced several other notable songs, including "Spanish Harlem," "Supernatural Thing," and "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)." His smooth voice and emotional delivery made his music resonate with audiences, leading to many covers of his songs by artists like Aretha Franklin, Shirley Bassey, and John Lennon.
King's contributions to music earned him a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 as a member of the Drifters. He was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2012. In addition to his musical achievements, King was active in charity work through the Stand By Me Foundation, which helped provide education to underprivileged youth.
Even as health issues arose, King continued performing, touring the UK in 2013 and the U.S. as late as 2014. He passed away on April 30, 2015, at the age of 76, after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Betty, three children, and six grandchildren. King's legacy lives on through his timeless music that continues to inspire generations.
